The Power of Face-to-Face Advocacy
Storytelling is a powerful experience. That’s why Hematology-Oncology Associates of Central New York (HOACNY) offers federal policymakers the chance to experience and understand a “day in the life” of a patient with cancer. This advocacy experience – formally known as the “Sit in My Chair” program – bridges the conversation between patients with cancer and their elected representatives.
Using event preparation materials provided by COA, each “Sit in My Chair” session walks a federal policymaker through a typical cancer treatment appointment, including registration, sitting in the waiting room, having candid conversations about a cancer diagnosis, and even undergoing a mock chemotherapy treatment with a nurse who explains all the intricate procedures. Over the years, dozens of patients have offered powerful insights to lawmakers who are humbled by the experience and eager to listen.
Due to the success of the program, some patients continue their advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill, sharing their story to policymakers in Washington, DC.
When CPAN advocates share their story, they bring unique perspective and compelling, personal insight that gives a face to community oncology – thereby amplifying the voices and lived experiences of patients to ensure policy change leads to a bright future for community cancer care.
